A well-balanced easy drinking white Rioja. The 2021 Ortega Ezquerro Blanco, DOC Rioja has aromas of candied lemons and stone fruits, and blossom notes. Fresh, but also fruity, this medium-bodied white has a nice texture and weight to it, a perfect pairing partner to a young Manchego.
Macabeo, also known as Viura in Rioja and Navarra, is a versatile white wine grape grown on both sides of the Pyrenees – in Spain and the southernmost reaches of France. Its taste can vary from fresh, floral, and aromatic when harvested early and aged in stainless steel, to weighty, honeyed, and nutty when aged in oak and harvested slightly later.
In Spain, it is the principal grape in white wines from Rioja and neighbouring regions, and it features prominently in sparkling Cava wines in Catalonia. Along the Mediterranean coast, it can be found in various areas, including Valencia, Yecla, and Jumilla. In France, known as Maccabeu, it is well-regarded but less common, primarily limited to the southern parts of Languedoc-Roussillon.
