A well-balanced, easy-drinking white Rioja. The 2021 Ortega Ezquerro Blanco, DOC Rioja, features aromas of candied lemons, stone fruits, and blossom notes. Fresh yet fruity, this medium-bodied white boasts a nice texture and weight, making it a perfect pairing partner to a young Manchego.
History and Winemaking
Macabeo, also known as Viura in Rioja and Navarra, is a versatile white wine grape cultivated on both sides of the Pyrenees – in Spain and the southernmost parts of France. Its flavour profile can range from fresh, floral, and aromatic when harvested early and aged in stainless steel, to weighty, honeyed, and nutty when aged in oak and harvested slightly later.
In Spain, it is the principal grape in white wines from Rioja and neighbouring regions, and it features prominently in sparkling Cava wines in Catalonia. Along the Mediterranean coast, Macabeo can be found in various areas, including Valencia, Yecla, and Jumilla. In France, known as Maccabeu, it is well-regarded but less common, primarily limited to the southern parts of Languedoc-Roussillon.
