Product Details
This is a classic complex Bordeaux style wine, deep ruby in colour with hints of brick. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, cassis and smoke. The palate is medium bodied, well rounded and supple, with red and black fruits, a little spice and rich, ripe juicy tannins. A big wine like this needs equally big cheeses to complement without overpowering one another. This wine pairs perfectly with mature cheddar, parmesan and washed rind cheeses such as Taleggio or Époisses.
Château Cantemerle, located in the Haut-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. It was classified as one of the Cinquièmes Crus (Fifth Growths) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, but its absence from the classification map at the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris caused some controversy.
The estate faced challenges in the 19th century, dealing with the phylloxera epidemic and grapevine attacks, leading to a significant drop in production. In the late 20th century, the estate was acquired by French insurance group Les Mutuelles d’Assurance du Bâtiment et des Travaux Public, who made substantial investments in the vineyards and winemaking facilities. Today, Château Cantemerle continues to produce fine wines, preserving its heritage and tradition in the Bordeaux region.
