Location
Spenwood is produced by Village Maid Cheese in Risely, Berkshire, England. Created by cheesemaker Anne Wigmore, it draws inspiration from Pecorino-style ewe’s milk cheeses, while reflecting the pastoral landscape and artisan spirit of rural Berkshire.
Tasting
Spenwood is a hard, mature ewe’s milk cheese with a beautifully firm, slightly brittle texture. Its flavour is clean, nutty, and gently sweet, developing deeper savoury notes and hints of caramelised butter as it ages. The rind imparts a rustic, earthy aroma that complements the cheese’s balanced complexity.
Pairing
This versatile cheese pairs excellently with crisp white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc or dry Riesling, and also works beautifully with lighter reds. It complements charcuterie, figs, fresh fruit, and crusty bread. Spenwood also performs well on a cheese board thanks to its refined flavour profile and excellent structure.
Recipe
Grate Spenwood over pasta, risotto, or roasted vegetables for a refined, savoury finish. It also adds wonderful depth to salads when shaved thinly, and can be used in place of Pecorino or Parmesan in many recipes. Try it melted into a vegetable gratin or scattered over soup for a rich, aromatic lift.
