How to use the Mouse & Grape Corkscrew

  1. Prepare the Bottle
    • Ensure the bottle of wine is standing upright on a flat surface.
    • Remove any foil or plastic capsule covering the cork. Some corkscrews have a small knife designed for this purpose.
  2. Extend the Corkscrew
    • Open the corkscrew so that the handle is at a 90-degree angle to the spiral (also known as the “worm”).
  3. Insert the Corkscrew
    • Position the tip of the corkscrew in the center of the cork.
    • Hold the bottle steady with one hand, and use your other hand to twist the corkscrew into the cork. Turn it clockwise.
    • Continue twisting until the corkscrew is inserted into the cork up to the last spiral.
  4. Engage the Lever
    • Most sommelier corkscrews have a two-step lever. Start with the first notch closest to the handle.
    • Place the first step of the lever on the lip of the bottle.
  5. Lift the Cork
    • Hold the lever firmly against the bottle’s lip.
    • Use the handle to lift the corkscrew, pulling the cork partway out of the bottle.
    • When you can’t lift any further, switch to the second step of the lever.
  6. Complete the Extraction
    • Move the lever to the second step, further down the corkscrew.
    • Continue lifting the handle, which should pull the cork the rest of the way out of the bottle.
  7. Remove the Cork
    • Once the cork is fully extracted, twist it counterclockwise to remove it from the corkscrew.
  8. Serve the Wine
    • Pour a small amount of wine into a glass to check for any cork particles or sediment.
    • If clear, proceed to pour the wine for your guests.

Tips

  • Stability: Keep the bottle steady throughout the process to prevent spills or breaking the cork.
  • Slow and Steady: Take your time to avoid breaking the cork inside the bottle.
  • Practice: If you’re new to using a sommelier corkscrew, practice on a few bottles to get the hang of the technique.

By following these steps, you’ll master the art of using a sommelier corkscrew, enhancing your wine-serving experience with elegance and ease.
