Location
There are few places in the world as beautiful as Luberon. Visiting the valleys in the heart of Provence, France, this was exactly the line of thinking that led actor John Malkovich and his wife to buy a farm and raise a family there. But in 2008, the couple felt it was a waste of the land to have it simply sit there untouched on their estate, and so the idea for LQLC was born. Rather uncharacteristically for the region known for Grenache and Mourvèdre, Malkovich decided to plant his personal favourites Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a unique vineyard, nicknamed ‘Little Siberia’ by its neighbours for the drastic swings in temperature the valley creates, but also home to 14 wells. This means that the grapes that grow here undergo totally different temperatures and have access to far more water than those raised around them. The results? A totally individual range of wines that could only be produced there.
Tasting
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, this Provence rosé stands out compared to others. The grapes are given two days of skin-contact before they are pressed, lending this wine a stronger colour and more texture than your average rose. As the grapes are harvested earlier you get a pleasant acidity that balances out the floral strawberry flavours with a dash of lime. Zingy and fresh, this rose is a great addition to anyone’s wine cellar.
Pairing
For pairings, imagine a light meal al fresco in Southern France. This wine goes beautifully with salads and grilled vegetables, as well as fresh seafood. To mix things up you can pair this with some sushi. Being a French wine it naturally pairs wonderfully with any number of soft French cheeses like Delice de Bourgogne and Brie de Meaux.
