History and Winemaking
Brännland Cider was founded in 2010 in Umeå, northern Sweden. The aim from the beginning was to create exceptional cider using cold-climate apples. In 2022, for their tenth vintage, they fully transitioned to wild yeast fermentation. This shift began in 2020 and reflects years of knowledge and trust in natural winemaking. Founder Andreas Sundgren says native yeasts help the fruit express itself more clearly. These yeasts finish at a similar alcohol level and stay flavour-neutral. They also add structure and a wilder, natural dimension to the final wine.
The 2022 vintage includes Mutsu, Cox Orange, Kim, Gloster, and a touch of Belle de Boskoop. Mutsu brings richness and intensity, while Cox, Kim, and Gloster offer red notes, tannins, and length. Belle de Boskoop adds complexity and seriousness to the blend. This vintage contains more residual sugar than usual, balanced by Brännland’s signature acidity. That combination gives the cider the ability to age gracefully over time.
