History and Winemaking
Founded in 1722 by Thomas Barton, an Irishman who settled in Bordeaux, Château Léoville Barton boasts a rich history. In 1826, his grandson, Hugh Barton, acquired 50 hectares of vines in the Saint Julien appellation, later classified as a “Second Classified Growth” in the historic 1855 classification. Over the years, the property was managed by various generations until Anthony Barton elevated Château Léoville Barton to international acclaim. Now, his daughter, Lilian, and her two children, representing the 10th generation, continue the Barton legacy. Nestled in the heart of St Julien terroir with beautiful slopes of Garonne gravel, the vineyard benefits from a clayey gravel subsoil, providing excellent growing conditions.
The traditional plowing avoids the use of weeding or herbicides. The vineyard mainly consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (20%), and Cabernet Franc (3%). Harvesting is meticulously done by hand, and the grapes are sorted and crushed before being placed in thermo-regulated wooden vats. Alcoholic fermentation lasts for 7 to 10 days, with gentle extraction to preserve the juice’s quality. After about 3 weeks of maceration, the juice is transferred to French oak barrels and aged for 16 to 18 months in a temperature-controlled cellar. This second wine of Château Léoville Barton is made from young vines and plots not meeting the requirements of the Grand Vin.
