Location

Keen’s Extra Mature Handpicked Cheddar is produced by George Keen and his family on their traditional dairy farm in Somerset, England. This region is known as the heartland of West Country cheddar. Its lush green fields, mild climate, and centuries-old cheesemaking tradition all contribute to the rich flavour and character of the cheese. The Keen family has made unpasteurised farmhouse cheddar since the 1890s, using milk from their own herd of cows. Today, they continue to craft each wheel by hand, following time-honoured methods. As a result, their cheddar reflects both the land and the passion behind its creation.

Tasting

This cheese stands out for its bold, tangy flavour and satisfying complexity. Aged for an extra six months in the family’s maturing rooms, it develops a deep, savoury profile that is full of character. The texture is firm and slightly crumbly, yet it still melts beautifully on the tongue. First, you’ll notice a hit of sharpness and salt. Then, richer, creamy notes follow—layered with hints of grass, cellar earth, and a touch of nuttiness. The finish lingers with a pleasant bite that cheddar lovers will appreciate. Thanks to its extended ageing, every bite of this cheese offers intensity and balance.

Pairing

Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar pairs well with both classic and creative accompaniments. Try it with crisp apples, pickled onions, or a smear of chutney. For drinks, choose a robust red like Cabernet Sauvignon or a full-bodied white like Chardonnay. It also matches well with local ciders, dark ales, or even a dram of whisky. On a cheeseboard, it provides bold contrast to softer, creamier cheeses. You can also serve it with rye crackers, roasted nuts, or crusty sourdough. Its strong flavour and firm texture make it a standout cheese that holds its own in any setting.

Recipe

Incorporate Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar into a classic mac and cheese for a luxurious twist, or melt it over a juicy burger for an unforgettable flavour experience. Its tanginess and rich texture elevate everyday dishes to gourmet levels.
