Location
Isle of Mull Cheddar is produced by the Reade family on the rugged Isle of Mull, Scotland. Hand-made on the family farm using milk from their own Friesian cows, the dairy sits close to a local whisky distillery near Tobermory.
Tasting
A hard-pressed, clothbound Scottish cheddar with serious character. Isle of Mull Cheddar has a pale ivory colour and a firm, slightly crumbly texture that melts beautifully on the palate. The flavour is bold, powerful, and complex, delivering a distinctive tang balanced by grassy, herbaceous notes from the island pastures. A subtle smokiness and depth come from the cows’ unique diet, which includes leftover whisky mash, alongside nutty undertones and a gentle hint of fruit. Long, savoury, and memorable, this is a cheddar for lovers of punchier styles.
Pairing
This robust cheddar pairs brilliantly with a hearty ale or a dram of Scotch whisky, both of which echo the cheese’s rich, malty undertones. It pairs exceptionally well with big oaked red wines like the Diemersdal and Chateau Cissac. For a fresher contrast, try it with a crisp apple cider. Isle of Mull Cheddar also excels when melted—perfect for toasties, gratins, or adding depth and richness to cooked dishes.
