Description
An elegant and expressive Pinot Noir from Chile’s coastal Leyda Valley, Ventisquero Grey Glacier Pinot Noir 2020 offers depth, freshness, and finesse in equal measure. Displaying a deep cherry red colour with subtle violet hues, this wine opens with an aromatic bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, and black cherries, layered with delicate notes of pepper, spice, damp earth, and a distinctive mineral edge reminiscent of graphite. On the palate, it is vibrant and beautifully structured, with a smooth entry, velvety tannins, and fresh acidity that carry through to a long, refined finish. A versatile wine that pairs wonderfully with a range of cheeses, from semi-aged Manchego to earthy Tomme or mild blue cheeses.
History and Winemaking
Produced in the Leyda Valley, a region renowned for its cool coastal influence, this Pinot Noir reflects the unique complexity of its soils. The vineyard features an unusual combination of sandy-clay layers interspersed with granite and coarse, pebbly sand, contributing to the wine’s structure and minerality.
Winemaking is carefully managed to preserve the purity of the fruit and enhance complexity. Half of the grapes were gently crushed, followed by a five-day cold maceration at 8°C to extract colour and aromatics. Fermentation took place between 22°C and 26°C, with daily monitoring to ensure optimal extraction. The wine remained in tank for 32 days before being transferred to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation.
Ageing plays a key role in achieving balance and harmony. The wine matured for 18 months in extra fine-grain French oak barrels (a mix of new and seasoned oak), followed by an additional 8 months of bottle ageing. This careful process results in a wine that seamlessly integrates fruit, oak, and structure, with excellent ageing potential of up to 10 years.
Tasting Notes
Deep cherry red in colour with violet reflections. Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, and black cherries are complemented by notes of spice, pepper, damp earth, and graphite. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with a smooth texture, firm yet velvety tannins, and a persistent, elegant finish.
Pairings
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with game meats such as venison or wild boar, as well as pork and lamb dishes. For cheese, it complements semi-hard and earthy varieties like Manchego, Tomme, or mild blue cheeses, enhancing both the wine’s fruit profile and savoury complexity.
