If you have not tried an iced cider, get ready to fall in love! 2022 Brännland Cider Apple Ice stands out with its fresh and vibrant flavours of red apple peel, apple core, and bitter almond and apple tart. This vintage offers a perfect balance between creamy smoothness and zesty citrus acidity, making it both refreshing and lively.
History and Winemaking
Brännland Cider, established in 2010 in Umea, northern Sweden, has always aimed to produce exceptional ciders using apples grown in a cold climate. In 2022, for their 10th vintage, Brännland Cider fully transitioned to using wild yeasts for fermentation. This change, which began earnestly in 2020, reflects a decade of accumulating knowledge, experience, and trust in the natural winemaking process.
Founder Andreas Sundgren notes that using native yeasts has brought a consistent expression to the 2022 vintage. These yeasts stop at roughly the same alcohol level regardless of starting sugar and remain neutral in their contribution to the wine’s expression, allowing the fruit to shine more prominently. The wild yeasts also add a wilder dimension to the finished wine, enhancing its complexity and intensity.
The apple varieties dominating the 2022 vintage include Mutsu, Cox Orange, Kim, Gloster, and a touch of Belle de Boskoop. Mutsu provides a rich, intense backbone, while Cox, Gloster, and Kim add red notes, light tannins, and length. Belle de Boskoop lends a touch of seriousness to the vintage.
The 2022 vintage has an unusual amount of residual sugar, matched by the hallmark acidity of Brännland’s ice ciders, ensuring the wine’s ability to age well.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Apple Ice presents a pale gold colour with enticing aromas of wild apple and baking spices. On the palate, it offers a blend of creamy smoothness and zesty citrus acidity, balanced by flavours of red apple peel, apple core, and bitter almond. This vintage is wilder and fresher on the nose, with a slightly mystical and complex character.
Food Pairings
Apple Ice is versatile and pairs well as a chilled aperitif. It is excellent with blue cheeses, fruity desserts, and also some savoury dishes like pork or asian dishes that can match the cider’s balance between sweetness and acidity.
